I just had my port transmission replaced. It's a Paragon P44. Prior to install, it was bench tested and shifted ok into forward, neutral and reverse. I ran the boat for the first time yesterday and right away the tranny won't engage in reverse. It moves about halfway toward reverse but stops. The shifter and linkage is ok. It appears to be internal. Any ideas why it would work on the bench but not engage once installed?

On mine it was a shift ''dog'' type of mechanism that had broken. took me awhile to find the part and all day to fish the other parts out and install it. It is in the top end of the trans so do not have to remove trans to fix. The p-44s do not have any adjustment one can make to'' tighten the reverse'' band ,etc. the shift mech I am talking about actually causes the band to tighten when shifting into rev--hence if it breaks--no reverse. I suppose it is possible that the reverse band in yours could be worn out--but based on mine being a 1973--and my band looked as if it had much wear left in it--I doubt it. I would also --obviously check my shift mechanism/cable to see if the transmission actually is being shifted into reverse position. BTW I repowered and if you need them I have the two P-44s out of my boat that are complete and worked perfectly when removed--- I would sell if you wanted--to use or spares--some parts for those P-44s are getting very difficult to find.
