Long story short, I own a beautiful 1968 CCC 38 which my wife and I have been refitting and updating over the past few years. The marina caused small fire damage during shrink wrapping December 2023. Now 7 months later they said the work is complete. Upon inspection today the job is half-as$ done.
We filed a police report today. The marina owner said if we go through their insurance they will claim it a total loss and I will get very little for it bc recent sales have been very low and mine isn't "in as good of shape as those."
Please help me fight them and get the real value of my boat and the pay out I deserve to make our boat right.
Thank you for reading.
Regardless of the value of your commander, if you hired them to shrink wrap your boat it is absolutely their responsibility to take care of the necessary repairs caused by their accidental damage.
The repairs need to look at least as good as the surrounding area.
Jeremy, And if they fail to do so?
You can contact your insurance and explain the situation.
They might pay for the damage and then subergate the marina's insurance to ultimately pay them back.
However there is always a chance your premium could go up.
Personally from the looks of your photos, I'd opt to just fix it on my own or hire someone to do the repairs to your liking. Your marina may not have anyone truly skilled enough to make a seamless repair . It doesn't look like all that much work really.
Now the area on your deck is a different story. I can see that the orig. gel is worn thru . The only way to fix that is to refinish a large enough area to be able to tie into an area with enough orig gel left or live with a smaller repair area that doesn't match until you're ready to tackle a larger refinish project

Actually found out today my I durance company denied my claim bc work already had been started on the boat.
Sorry to hear your insurance denied your claim.
I would still suggest you tell the marina you dont accept the mis match gel coat work they did and demand a much better repair job .
I know how difficult it sometimes can be to make a seamless gelcoat repar as I do this work for a living but couldn't imagine being ok with giving someone sub par work on their boat
All good advice here. Now to answer your question tho. The only “value” you will get on your boat is thru a survey and truthfully? It wont be a solid value. Never is. Also it will cost you money and the results rarely make an owner happy. Now that being said, I dont believe this repair will total the boat but thats only and opinion not a fact.
