Trying to figure out what to do with this engine, it has a tick. With the manifold covers off, nothing looks/feels wrong, so it must be inside. Please listen to this audio, it actually sounds worse in person, its a clear tick at all RPMs.
Not even sure where to start. Mechanic suggested a few options
1. replacing the engine (not ready for that yet)
2. Start stripping it down in the boat and maybe find the problem 3. if not, then take it out of the boat and send it to a good shop to find/fix the issue.
I'd like to keep this engine because its the original engines and I'm not ready to repower. The engine was rebuilt only 120 hours ago, but 7 years ago... So lack of use could have been a factor, who knows? The other engine purrs like a kitten!
Part of me feels like putting the covers back on and just USING the engine even with the tick (maybe it'll go away 👀?)
Part of me feels like replacing both engines with new Crusders and not having to worry (as much) about stuff. (except divorce and financial insolvency)
Part of me feels like i should get to the bottom of this so I know both engines are running the best they can?
Any wisdom?
On a previous boat I had a CC marine power 454 and it had a tick in the Stbd engine could never figure out. Mechanics said run it till something happens, well it happened. Turns out the Stbd engine has a timing gear, not chain, the cam gear had a defect or cracked a nd was tapping on the timing cover and eventually let go. Ended up having to rebuild engine due to the damage when the cam gear broke.
When I went looking for parts that was the first time I ran across Earl. I showed him the part, that my mechanic could not source for several weeks, he walks into the back and comes out with a NOS gear. Cash and carry. He is always my first stop for CC parts.
Good luck.
@Jason Law they’re actually are a lot of YouTube videos that talk about running it at high RPMs and the tap will go away, but that doesn’t seem very wise.
It be careful running it , doesn’t appear to be getting oil up to the rockers .
