My port starter is not catching and making an alful grinding sound. I am told this indicates a failed bendix. I am also told that to get to the starter that is bolted on from underneath outboard on the port engine I will need to remove the riser and exhaust manifold. Is this the best way to get to the starter? Any advise on what make starter to replace it with?

Is engine original? If not, what year and make?
I can’t imagine you have to remove all that to replace a starter!
It is a 1968 31 Sedan , hull #1 Original engines. 327/350
If it is a 327 F (starter & flywheel in back of engine), maybe easier to access by removing riser. I have had good luck with Arco (so far).
It is a Q engine flywheel forward and on the first few 31 Salons there is less room fore and aft in the engine room, it is very tight. Looks like the riser and exhaust manifold are coming off.
