I have tried to move my electronic distributor 1 tooth as I am only able to catch one side of the hold down clamp and still not able to fully advance to the proper alignment to the drill hole. I am short ny about 1/2”. My flywheel has two holes drilled, one slightly larger than the other. I am assuming one is TDC and the other the advanced mark. When I set to the TDC the engine is difficult to start, backfires, and floods out and stalls as the engine warms or under load. If i just move the gear then try to move the body the distributor will not go down all the way. What am I doing wrong?? I am afraid if I move them both at the same time I will oose my reference ( small mark on the body rim for the rotor) for my base timing. Any suggestions?

You will need to get a long straight slot screw driver and rotate the oil pump drive that connects to the bottom of the distributor, then try again. What I have also done is take an old cap and drill a hole at #1 and can get the timing close. If the crab cap is lined up straight and the rotor is hitting #1 on the cap you should be real close. I have a race car guy to fine tune mine after I get it close. If the crab cap is on an angle, you are a tooth off.
