My roof support metal support beam is intact but at the salon floor it isn't attached to anything. Are there drawing or parts illustrations that would be available to make a replacement base? I will be working out a support to run from the longitudinal stringers up to jack everything back in place but need to put back the base before that.
I looked all over the super disc but didn't locate posts about the roof support.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks
It's been MANY MANY years since I did this job on a 38 sedan I had. But @Charlene Pike will know where to look if it still exists. Char? It would have been a Lady Jo post.
Hi Lee, Here is what I found in Superdisc. Unfortunately, only the link to your old website is included not the write up of the project. Very early days of archiving when it didn't occur to us that websites would go away.
Many thanks. Maybe the exhaust support is involved. My exhaust is now rubber and fiberglass tube hung from above and obviously not original as power is now 81 merc 454. I never thought the support plates would be underneath. So I'll have look there.
You might have to zoom in a bit but here's some after and before photos of that C- Chanel hard top structure on my 35.
The orig L brackets were just 90 degrees and had wooden shims (which had failed) to take up the difference where they fastened to the cockpit sole frame .
I had new stainless brackets welded up to the exact angle I needed so no shim would be needed. I did however add a piece of hard rubber in that joint to reduce the chances of squeaks or rattles.
The original fasteners were just wood screws and had sheared off long ago leaving the hard top brace to wobble around. The new fasteners are stainless lag bolts.
In my boat the floor frame it attaches to had also developed a nasty sag so I replaced the entire frame with a significantly oversized one which had to be scarfed in place from below then glassed to the underside of the floor and as well as glassed on each end to the hull side
This is help. Thank you. I will report back as things progress.
This discussion piques my interest, as my 67 38 sedan also has issues. All the windows on the stbd side don’t slide because there’s so much weight on them. Clearly some support is missing somewhere.
Great stuff here! The PO for my ‘66 ‘38 had aluminum supports custom welded and bolted to the big stringers that hold engines. The upper end of those new supports hold up pressure treated 2x4s in many spots. You can see one of them on the left side of my port engine.
These help a lot! However, when she’s on the hard, the doorway squeezes in about 1/8” and becomes difficult to close. These boats have quite a bit of flex.
I’d suggest custom aluminum supports bolted downward to a reinforced stringer or to a new lateral support. That beefy log glassed-in in the prior post looks perfect.
My Express has never had a fly bridge, but I do wonder (at 215lbs myself) how much weight she can hold up there, and how much weight my big wide cabin roof can hold. I tell people the limit is two persons at one time.
I also need to get a Superdisk!
Great discussion 👍🏼
