Mike, what are your issues? I have had issues finding a mechanic that is available and willing to look at the 427s. Total Performance is good for major issues. If you are having starting or running issues there is a wealth of information available here and other online sources, if you are mechanical. I am out of the area for another 2 weeks but would be willing to chat when back in area. I have a 68 35 with 427s.
The distributer caps don't last on the motor you may get 2 or 3 rides and the motor stars missing.
Also the motor was rebuilt in 2023, new wires, plugs and the carb was rebuilt.
And Thank you!
Who did the rebuild? Do you have the Mallory 502yl distributors? What are your ignitions?
Dependable Marine , Chesterfield Mi. Electronic ignitions. Crap style cap Sierra 18-5375.
I would start with what you can check yourself. Ensure plug wires are not crossed. Timing is set per manual and Tim Toth method. If you are burning up caps and wires there must be a voltage issue, possibly coil. Also reach out to Lee Dahlen, he is a wealth of info.
Thank you!
Sorry, You have a "Known Problem" and Sierra crab caps are well documented in the archives as just plain Chinese crap. Ask me how I know. But what I have found in the past is that when the crabs start failing sometimes it's because of an oil film spray or years of grease mist inside flying around which causes crossfire. When you have your next issue, Try taking the cap off, Using some carb cleaner spray and let it dry thoroughly before reinstalling. If that fixes the misfire, you will need to go deep into the dist, and do a thorough cleaning. Years back Our club under the leadership of Dick Morland, has put together a cap modification kit for the Small block Chevrolets that converts from Crab to standard caps and works great. I have heard whispers of an R&D into working on one for the 427's but it's still in early stages. One of the issues that would have to be studied is hatch clearance as the 427 is up front and high. Stay tuned, or sign up to help if you have talent or machinery!! We always need volunteers!!
Thank you.
