We are planning to recarpet the entire salon, front and back cabins and two bathrooms and helm area. The salon and the rest of the inside will have all the hatches custom cut and finished ( so you can access anything mechanical) and the helm will be done with a special outdoor material suitable for out door use. The estimate is coming in at $12,000. Thoughts? This is an experienced group that is known for doing quality work.

Hi Jackie, Great boat. I have one too. The amount is definitely a lot of money. By todays standards, it may be very reasonable. The outside materials like sea deck and such are very expensive and require significant time and expertise to install. The salon if they are cutting and binding or edging for access points, that is also a lot of time and expertise. I have carpeted ours and it is not that difficult to get the perimeter right, but the hatches in a 42 present a challenging endeavor. There are 8! I went with carpet squares to give me ultimate access. I love it, the Admiral hates it. If you are going to get lots of use and enjoyment out of how it looks and functions, then it is worth it. If you are concerned about the bid being competitive, get another bid. Cheers and enjoy. Thank you for being a Commander Club Member.
Hi Jackie... I have a 42 as well... I'll echo the comments of Mr. Schriber... I went with carpet tiles for most of the interior, and chose not to put anything on the aft deck helm area. $12k sounds like a LOT of money, but it's been a while since I did carpet the needed to be bound on the edges - my last with that was the aft deck of my 35, and I think that cost me around $600 for just the binding.. Admittedly, this was a good 25 years ago, and certainly not as complex as what you'd have for the 42.
For our 1967 42, I put in teak and holly flooring in the v-berth, forward head, galley, and aft head. For the salon and aft cabin, we did carpet tiles. The carpet tiles are really good one's by Shaw - they are 18" square. My reasoning for going this route... easy to remove, and more importantly, I didn't want to see the binding for the engine hatches. Granted the carpet tiles aren't as soft on the feet, but they are super easy to remove (for cleaning or engine access) and put back in place. I think it took me all of a day to get the galley and the aft cabin put in place (whole tiles in the center, with partials around the edge). I think our cost (this was about 12 years ago) was about $1,200 - and that was for Shaw carpet tiles (a good manufacturer).
Not sure what you are looking to put on the back deck, but do think $12k is high, even though it's a tighter area, and requires a lot when patterning, cutting, and binding to be sure it looks nice when done.
Here are a couple of pictures of our final results...
ABOVE: The day we installed the teak and holly (plywood) for the v-berth, forward head, and galley - no toilet or fridge installed yet...
ABOVE: Aft cabin and aft head flooring just after the install in 2012. It all looks just as good today... we are very happy with how the carpet tiles have held up.
ABOVE: Salon flooring just after the install in 2012. Super happy with not having carpet binding lines...
