On my 1968 31 Commander I have a pair of 327/350 engines with the Mallory electronic ignitions. I have multiple holes drilled in the flywheel but I am pretty sure I have located the TDC and advanced holes. I can het the timing set so the engine starts right up cold and idles OK but tends to flood at low RPM under load. It feels like I need to advance just a little more and perhaps another hole will come into view bit I am at the limit for advancing on the distributor hold down. I attemprd to jump a tooth orvtwo on the distb. Gear but the assembly would not drop to the full depth and moving the plug wires one station the engine would not start regardless of possition. Anyone gone thru this dance and found a solition to this???

Ok I solved the mystery. Seems my distributor was off 1 tooth. I found a hot rod video on youtube where the distributor would not drop. Inside on the bottom is a tab that drops into the oil pump, it has to be rotated the same amount as the shaft. There are 13 teeth on the distributor gear or about 28°. Expansion tank in relation to one of the plugs and the rotor to the dist body before removing the distributor. It took a few tries to get 1 tooth and the oil pump lined up but when I did two holes in the flywheel came into view thru the window with the timing light. One is TDC and my timing light has a dial on it to verify the advance…. It is set now at 12°. I will let you know if she runs at idle under load without flooding and stalling and if we now get a good WOT rpm.
