Thinking about replacing my Prestolite Distributors on early 80's CC454s. Advance springs are NLA and not getting any younger. There seem to be a lot of options out there (Pertronix, GM Delco Voyager, DUI, etc.). Any recommendations?
I think we used the same ones but they had to be re gapped. (Not positive) The documentation will tell you. These are basically Marine Delco HEI with the coil on top of the cap. You will do away with your current coil and change the Ignition and Tach wiring to fit. (Connectors are included)
Captain Thomas ...... Just an fyi for you to consider that the DUI marine distributor does not have the correct Chris Craft timing advance curve for your engines . The Dui product is a nice unit but they do not understand what a marine advance curve should be set at and do not have that info available to them . You are heading to uncharted shallow water with the wrong timing advance curve .
I would think most of the gen 4 454 BBCs of that era would have similar advance curves with peak HP around 330 at 4000 RPM. I believe both CC and Crusader used the Prestolite distributors.
I have installed Pertronix flame thrower ignitor II distributors in 2 different boats with 454's. easy installation and good quality one boat had Mallory's and the other had Delco voyagers that module (one was dead & the other wouldn't advance) failures. Both boats ran dependably and seemed to have better power after installing the pertronix distributors. If you get pertronix make sure to buy the correct coils to go with them!
DUI marine. Make sure you specify. I installed 2 on a carver for a client and they were great and easy to work with.
Thanks Lee! Can the same spark plugs be used (MR43T) or is there one that works better with the DUIs?

On my past boat with 454 Crusaders, I replace my distributors with Mallory Marine YL series and never looked back.
