When my upper steering assembly fell apart due to rotten wood inside the flybridge, I replaced the cable with a Dyneema line. I put five turns around the drum on the upper steering shaft, but it’s not enough friction. I could put on a new line of longer length to add a few turns on the drum, but I’m thinking about another solution: put a sprocket on the shaft (or drum) and replace that end of the Dyneema with a chain, just like it is on the lower helm end. Has anyone done this? Or another solution?

I have done a few conversions over the years, but none of them involved staying original. Went hydraulic (Sea Star) Systems on both stations. about a 2-3 day job with 2 people start to finish.
Thanks, Lee. I thought about that but it seems expensive. The lower helm is all mechanical with levers and shafts; is it possible to leave that in place and do hydraulic only on the upper side?

Hydraulic is so much more reliable than the orig. Mechanical setup and much more smooth
It's an investment well worth it!
