My 31' Commander turned 50 years in August last year. For various reasons she did not get any presents at the time, which with hind site seems a bit cruel. So, in preparation for the coming season, I thought I will make it up to her. Not to mention that I expect to have som fun myself on the way. This is what is in store for her:

Essentially I plan to replace the old Bennett trim tabs with so called interceptors. I am also replacing ALL motor gauges and navigational instruments with state of the art digital stuff. And finally (to please my wife as well) I am installing a digital TV-set and a coffee maker.

Top row from left:

  • Zipwake interceptor type trim tabs
  • LTC 24"  LED digital TV with DVD player
  • LTC omnidirectional TV-antenna
  • Coffe maker

Middle row:

  • 2x Actisense EMU-1 analoge -> NMEA 2000 engine data conversion boxes
  • Mobile Partners WiFi & 4G router
  • Maretron Internet Gateway (for connecting the NMEA 2000 network to the internet router)
  • Maretron Digital Compass, NMEA 2000
  • Maretron Depth, speed, temp sender, NEMA 2000

Front row:

  • Actisense NGT-1 NMEA2000 <-> USB fGateway or connecting a PC for setup and programming.
  • Various NMEA 2000 cables and connectors

Not in the photo: 2x iPads that will be used for displaying all engine and navigational data.

For all you "propeller heads" out there I attached a system design drawing. May "the Force" be with me when installing all this. I will try to keep you posted!

Looks like fun.  You will have a happy Commander.

Funny how we're so quick to add personality to our boats!? Ours turns 50 next May and I've put more thought into what we might do for the boat than any birthday I've ever had!?

For those newer members who don't know the whole story, this is a very lucky 31 that has received many "presents" during it's 50 years ! Almost 20 years ago this 31 was rescued from the swamps of Florida and treated to a nice freighter ride to Sweden where she received a major refit at a high end Swedish boatyard. Shortly after this was complete, Alarik gave her a present of 2 new Mercruiser 350 MPI engines ! Since then, it's been mainly normal TLC till now, when she is about to get the serious presents that Alarik described above. Moral of the story ---- This is a really lucky and pampered boat indeed :-)
