This one came up local and he says it has Cat diesels. Could be a good liveaboard, but it doesn't match the model library. Can anyone chime in?

Hi Pat:

You are correct about the 3208.  However, I seem to recall about 25 years ago a 42 with Cats being the 3160. Hatteras used these engines in their 36’ Convertibles.  Around 1974, a number of improvements were made and it was rebranded as the 3208NA.  Both were rated the same at 210hp @ 2800RPM.  It eventually achieved a rating of 450 hp @ 2800 RPM.

The 38’ and 42’ Commanders had the same Diesel engine option over the CC427’s being the Detroit Diesel 8V53N engines.  In later years when many of these boats repowered, the very obvious choice was to go with the CAT 3208TA.  It had the very same foot print as the old Detroits and could use the same air intake and exhaust systems as well as the fuel piping.  However, to complete the project the following had to change:     1) Bigger propellers were needed;

2) Shaft size had to increase from 1.5” to 2.00”;

3) Sea water intakes had to be increased in capacity;

4) Horsepower went from 283 to 450 per engine;

5) Weight decreased from 2300 lbs to 2000 lbs per engine;

6) BSFC (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption) decreased by roughly 10%.

Hello Paul:

Your information is only partially correct. With the very successful 3208TA at 375 hp, requests were being made for a higher horsepower version to satisfy needs in the new boat industry.  The response from CAT was to introduce the 425 hp version which turned out to be a huge mistake especially when operated in the tropics such as Florida waters.  Production was stopped immediately after about a year’s worth of engines and the complete engine was thoroughly examined from top to bottom.  The end results were as follows:  

1) Complete redesign of the fresh water cooling system with ample more capacity because of the larger aftercooler;

2) A much bigger Sherwood pump replacing the smaller Jabsco;

3) Larger fuel injection pump with also a compression ratio change and larger fuel injectors;

4) Block was further stiffened;

5) Revised Twin Disc 507 Marine gear;

6) Larger Garrett AirResearch water cooled Turbo.

All this produced the introduction of the quite successful and venerable 435 hp version which was a very popular.  In its last two years of production a 450 hp version was introduced but only very few were built.  The moral of the story is to stay very far away from the 425 version but go with extreme confidence with the 435/450 versions.

New Faces, New Perspectives - Executive Committee Openings to start in January 2020

Would you like to be more active in the Commander Club? Would you like to help chart our course? Are you willing to commit the time, energy and creativity needed to assist us in promoting and supporting our mission?

We are searching for new faces and new perspectives. Positions start in January 2020 for a two year term.

There are four positions available. Chief Commander, Treasurer, Public Relations Chair and Membership Chair.

The Executive Committee (EC) convenes monthly via conference call. Meetings typically last 90 minutes or less. Most work done via e-mail. Each job has its own time commitment depending on club activities. Current EC members will mentor you.
