I’m going to be removing my Onan MDJC 12KW hopefully this winter. We thought the starter was bad but somewhere there is a serious short and it draws everything down. Hard to find anyone to work on these so I’m looking to replace it with something newer and lighter. I’m probably going to start disassembly over the winter to help getting it out of the hole and through the narrow cc cabin door.  Injectors and starter are new. If anyone needs anything let me know.

You’re making the right choice. Check out the full size (not compact - I don’t like that model) Phasor 12.5kw I’ve been very happy with it and it’s dead reliable. My MDJC was out of service half the time waiting on expensive hard to find parts.

Chris,

Thanks for the thoughts.  Took me a while this morning to find that you responded to the classified section.  I've looked at Phasor and it looks like a good option.  The compact models are a lot lighter.  Why don't you like them?  I don't think I need 12.5 given we would never run the AC units at one time or could run the stove or water heaters.  Just need something to recharge batteries and occasional use.  The 9.5 compact is tempting.  Even in August Lake Michigan may hit 70 degree water temp but it can flip and drop to the 50's in a few hours.

The full size are larger displacement and more metal which in my mind in a generator = better cooling, less stress, and a longer lifespan. That said I’m probably being silly, the ancillary stuff on the electrical side and the control hardware always goes out before the motor. The big reason I went with the full size is you actually need the weight, the generator is not centerline in this boat, it will result in a permanent list. I have put a couple hundred hours on my new phasor without a single hiccup. They’re made by kubota and are just great. It’s like a northern lights without the nosebleed parts prices, they use commonly available stuff you can get anywhere. Not that I’ve had to replace anything.
