After 53 years, the original 327 finally rotted out and has been replaced with a 350 short block and is about to be lifted back into the boat. How much ATF should the direct drive HF-7 Paragon gear take as a starting point. One quart? Two quarts? Ill adjust the level after the engine runs for a while

I thought this would be a quick search of the files section but... none of the manuals offers a good answer.  You can find out how to take apart, reassemble etc. but the answer to your question is: Ta Da, add some oil check dipstick,fill to high mark start, run, shift to reverse, check and fill to top of mark.  The manuals defense is: will depend on angle of installation.

I thought at some point I had seen mention of some number of quarts but as I recall I have never needed more than a quart when changing.

I remember 1.5 quarts on our 38, but I think the half quart was because of the reduction gear. For a direct drive Paragon, I would initially fill with one quart, then start the engine to fil the transmission oil cooler if the boat has one. After a minute run, shut it off and check transmission oil level.

Dick Nailed it.  1.5 after run in is what it will be. One word of caution.

Make sure it's full before putting an underway load on it. Check, Check and re check. I watched a shop in Virginia, fill one after rebuilding, told the customer on his way to Canada it was ready. And after about 5 mins of plane, the new trans was smoked. Done, and had to be rebuilt again at the shops dime.

The part Dick mentions about making sure the cooler has time to fill is the key. Otherwise, it will fill the cooler and the trans will run empty. I run in the slip to about 1200 then shut down and re check,

Thanks for the replies. Being a new engine with a new flat tappet cam, I have to keep the RPMs up around 1200 or so for the first thirty minutes so I don't wipe the cam and lifters. I have a quart in it now. Ill add another 1/4 qt. and then adjust the level after cam break in.

New Faces, New Perspectives - Executive Committee Openings to start in January 2020

Would you like to be more active in the Commander Club? Would you like to help chart our course? Are you willing to commit the time, energy and creativity needed to assist us in promoting and supporting our mission?

We are searching for new faces and new perspectives. Positions start in January 2020 for a two year term.

There are four positions available. Chief Commander, Treasurer, Public Relations Chair and Membership Chair.

The Executive Committee (EC) convenes monthly via conference call. Meetings typically last 90 minutes or less. Most work done via e-mail. Each job has its own time commitment depending on club activities. Current EC members will mentor you.
