Hello All,

I'm a newbie and just took possession of my new (to me) 1984 Catalina 381. I'm having trouble figuring out how to fire up the genset. Everything seems to work on shore power. I tried different combinations of shore power on, shore power off, breakers on/off, selector on inlets/generator, pushing the preheat button/holding the preheat button, etc. Every time I toggled the start switch on the generator I got nothing. I feel like I'm missing something simple. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Silly question... is the battery selector on to start it? Might have its own battery source?

Thanks for the suggestion, Justin.  Turns out that isn't the case. I bypassed the switches at the electrical panel and went right to the generator. I tried the start switch there and got what sounded a lot like a solenoid buzzing when trying to start a car. Is my battery just low? Could I have a starter problem?

Do you have a genset manual? If not there’s one somewhere on this site (amazing thing about it) the gen could have been winterized some how weirdly that could cause a issue starting. Otherwise, check your battery voltage. If those weren’t  tendered correctly that could be another issue

Make ,  model ,  fuel ? ??

I'm assuming this is a gas boat, in which case the preheat switch does nothing.  Is the generator battery switch turned on?  Are the fuses on the generator control box good?

Thanks for the replays everyone. The starter battery for the generator is a separate battery and it was low. The genny cranks over well, but still doesn't start. I believe that it's due to low fuel in my port tank. I'm at about a quarter tank and I think the uptake for the generator is above the fuel level. The idea being that you don't want to run yourself out of fuel with the generator... Does this make sense? I'm going to get some fuel and try the genny again.
