Repowering a 35 commander salon with 489ci big blocks.

I'm would like to buy everything I need for the swap before pulling the boat out of the water.  Does anyone know where I buy the larger shafts, struts and suffix boxes for the new big blocks.

I have no idea where to find these parts

Shafts you'll probably want to get locally. Struts and stuffing boxes, Chris Parts, Robert Henkel, Marine Sales, Algonac cast, Buck algonqine.

Deep Blue Yacht Supply will have what you need at reasonable (for boats) prices. I have bought from them in the past. They sell prop shafts, couplers, and I think dripless packings.

If memory serves you would not be the first to 1 3/8 struts to 1.5 inch.

Tim is right,

You dont need to replace the struts. There is NOT enough metal to just bore out your struts but what can be done is to get your new cutlass bearings centerless bored . So you would have the brass outer portion made thinner to fit your existing strut holes.

To Make it easier to replace the  bearings in the future I opted to have the portion of the strut bore fwd. of the bearing bored out so that the bearing can now be easily pressed out. The original design had an internal lip that the bearings rested against . while it does a good job of keeping the bearing in place it makes removing   a worn bearing very difficult to remove .

in the photo above you can see the new bearing in the orig strut to accept a 1.5" shaft.

In the photo below you can see the fwd. side of the strut where I had some metal removed to allow future bearing changes to be much easier by simply pressing the old one out
